Translate the unit path before you calculate

A common arithmetic-reasoning failure is not the arithmetic. It is choosing numbers before naming the quantity the question asks for.

Original practice example

A 12-gallon tank is three-quarters full. A pump removes 1.5 gallons per minute. How many minutes will it take to empty the amount currently in the tank?

  1. Write the target. Time in minutes.
  2. Find the current amount. 12 × 3/4 = 9 gallons.
  3. Write the unit path. 9 gallons ÷ 1.5 gallons per minute.
  4. Calculate and label. 6 minutes.

Why distractors feel plausible

Using the full 12 gallons gives 8 minutes; multiplying instead of dividing gives 13.5; using three-quarters of the rate answers a different question. The explanation should name the reasoning error, not merely reveal the key.

Practice routine

  • Circle or restate the requested unit.
  • Write intermediate quantities with units.
  • Estimate the direction and rough size before exact calculation.
  • After a miss, solve a new transfer problem rather than repeating the same item.
